NFL Lockout

The time has come in which all sports fans feared. The NFL on Friday announced there was a break down on the negotiations and a lock out was announced for the 2011-2012 season. There are many different issues swirling around this whole debacle. NFL owners among some of their desires want to pay rookies less money and they want to take away two preseason games and want to add two games to the regular season. Players of course do not like the idea of adding two more games on to the season, which is already grueling enough on the players as it is. Now no matter what malarkey some NFL or sports analyst tries to feed you, all of this comes down to money. Money! Don’t let anyone feed you any other bull either. The owners want more money. The players want more money. The game in which millions of fans watch during the NFL season may not be on this year because of greed. Discontent. A unquenchable thirst for more and more.

Of course I do not feel bad for the owners or the players. They have more money then they will ever know what to do with. They are over paid enough as it is and they have nothing to worry about. The fact that they are going to cancel this sport which so many people love just because the consumption of greed is sickening. But there is something even more serious in this whole event. Do not feel bad for the players or the owners. The people in which we need to feel sorry about, is the thousands of people who are going to lose their jobs who get work from the NFL season. When I say thousands I do not mean, then, a hundred, or even a thousand, I mean thousands are going to lose their jobs that get work during the NFL season or cater to working for the NFL. Some of those people who desperately need the job who are going to lose it because people who already have millions, sometimes in the case of the owners, billions, can only think about how they can makes themselves even richer then they already are. Billions of dollars, which get pumped into the economy from the NFL, are going to be lost. It well be felt even harder in cities like Detroit who are already in a epic struggle for the very survival of their city are going to lose crucial income. Do the owners give a rat’s butt though? No. As long as they have their vast fortunes, they are going to sit down and they are not going to budge until their needs are met.

Of course it might just be their lust for money, which ends this whole situation. After all, the season is still a good time away. To my knowledge there is still time for them to work things out in order for there to be a season this year. After all, the owners are going to lose money by not having a season. Not that it will really hurt them, but it is going to hurt them more then if they came to an agreement with the player’s union. I of course love college football more then I do pro, but I love watching my Packers, my Super Bowl Champion Packers, on Sunday. What people I hope realize though, whether you love the NFL or hate the NFL, I hope you realize and remember the thousands of people who are going to lose their job. I love football and I do not know what I am going to do if there is no season this year, but there are things more important then us having a lack of entertainment. Greed is a powerful thing and it is the forefront reason why the NFL is in a lock out right now. It is not just the owners though of course. The players union is being just as stubborn and unwilling to budge,. Going as far as to tell young kids they should not show up to the draft. Both sides need to get their heads out of their butts and come to an agreement. I would be highly disappointed if there was no NFL season. I think I would be more disgusted by the fact that neither side could let go of their insatiable greed for more and more. Your not only letting the fans down, the reason why the sport is so popular in the first place, but your putting people’s jobs at jeopardy. It is down right disrespect and down right distasteful. I will continue to monitor this situation as I know all of the sports fans will be doing.

New Valentines Day note

Valentine’s Day is suppose to be a day about love. A day in which we show those who we care about they are special. How do we do this? By buying them stuff. It has become yet another Hallmark holiday and nothing more. And it sickens me so many people buy into it. Do you really need a day out of the year set aside for an excuse to show someone how much you care? If you honestly do care and think they are special, you will be letting them know every day. I am not trying to say it is wrong to do something nice for the one you love today, but don't let it be simply for the fact you are compelled to buy into this materialistic holiday. Don't buy the special someone a gift because if you don't you are going to get an earful. Valentine’s Day, whatever it was suppose to be originally, is no longer the case for most people the way they tend to practice it. For most, it is merely about equating love with buying someone material possessions. Don't buy into it. If you love someone, this day in reality should be like most days. If you truly love someone, you do not need a day on the calendar as an excuse to shower them with love.

Super Bowl Review

I apologize to all my fans for taking so long to post this, but such is life when you actually have other things to do. As many of you may know, I am a huge Green bay Packers fan. So I was absolutely ecstatic last Sunday, when they won their first Super bowl since 1997 when they faced the New England Patriots. (They went the next year, but lost to the Denver broncos.) Talk about a great night. My eyes were a little teary eyed, as I got to witness an incredible game. Rodgers of course won the MVP and though there are a number of people who it could of went to, it was big for the man who finally has the Brett Favre shadow off of him. The 10-6 regular season the packers had, devastated by injuries on the defense really did not show how tough this team was going to be. The Packers may have started off in the Wild Card, but they ended up showing the world why they are a force to be reckoned with.

And what an incredible game it was. Two great teams put on great performances. The first half looked all Packers as they went in to the locker rooms at half time leading the Steelers 21-10. Yes, with Woodson and Shields hurt, the secondary struggled which opened the door for not only Big Ben to start passing, but the running game to make some big plays as well. Shields would come back however and despite the fact the final score ended up being 31-25, much closer then what the score was at half time obviously, the packers never lost the lead. It was a very intense game and it is one of the best Super bowls in years, and I try to say that as non biased as I can since my team not only went, but won it. I hope you enjoyed it sports fans, it might be the last one we see until 2013 if they do not have a season this year.

SAU Music Man Review

In life, you do not always get the privilege of watching something incredible. It is when we see such incredible things we must take a step back, and embrace the moment with open arms and admiration. Such a privilege came to me when I got to witness Spring Arbor University put on the musical The Music Man. It is a timeless classic in the theatre. It is one, which gets done so often, one really has to have the drive to give it a distinct voice. To say, “look at what we were able to accomplish”. It takes a lot of perseverance to be able to stand out from the rest of the sheep of music man musicals. Dr. Paul Patton and the cast did a phenomenal job at doing just that. I do not lie, I am not the biggest fan of musicals, but this is by far the best one I have ever seen in my life yet. Not only did the central roles step up to bat (yes I am a sports fan and baseball is just around the corner. Cut me some slack), but the cast as a whole was able to blend in to create a awe inspiring atmosphere. The anticipation, which boomed through the auditorium, was more than satisfied with the spectacular performance given to them by the hard working, dedicated cast and crew.

I give the whole cast my accolades; Dr. J would like to congratulate a few people in particular. First to his very good friend Trevor Tracy, who got to play the lead role as Harold Hill the night I went. What an incredible performance. The man is only getting better and will go on to do very big things. He captured his character to perfection and was able to dazzle with a performance very few could match with the caliber he has. But I had the honor of many of my friends being in this play. Katie French who played another lead as the mayor’s wife, Kyle Thompson, Marc Anderson, Spencer Carlson, and Aaron Laidler in the pep band (if I forgot someone forgive me, I am only one man) congrats to all of you, thank you for your amazing performance and enhancing an already incredible performance to make it that much better. Again congrats to all the cast, the crew, the pep band, anyone who had a part in the play. You did an amazing job. That is Dr. J’s thought of the day. – Jacob “Dr. J” Sabin

Brady Hoke andThe Future of Michigan Football

So the one thing Dr. J is not going to do is be a hypocrite. I am not going to sit here and tell you Brady Hoke was my first choice to be the coach of the University of Michigan’s football team. At first, I would of much rather have had a Harbaugh or a Les Miles to be the next coach. Being said however, I am excited about the things Brady Hoke is going to do for Michigan and I want to talk about some of those reasons and how I feel he has some real potential.

First let’s discuss Harbaugh. Jim Harbaugh’s dream was to coach in the NFL. He wanted to coach in the NFL. If he would of came to Michigan instead of going into the NFL, it would of just been a matter of time before he left Michigan to go and it could have been very well in the near future, which means very realistically, we do not know how long we would have had have had him for our head coach. Les Miles another Michigan man like Harbaugh has had some great success at LSU. It is not too surprising why he choose to stay at a school where he is already loved and is already proving to have success at. But the two people who I wanted to be the head coach obviously did not have the interest for the job.

In comes Brady Hoke. Although he did not play for Michigan, he did coach for Michigan under Lloyd Carr. Hoke is a Michigan man in that sense and unlike Rich Rodriguez, who after being fired donated all his Michigan stuff (my view he is just being bitter about being fired but it still went to a good cause), Hoke knows Michigan football. He knows the history, he knows the traditions, and he knows what Michigan fans value. He is not going to give the #1 jersey to someone on defense. He truly understands the importance of the rivalry games we have at Michigan. One of the biggest things is to be the head coach at Michigan is his dream job. Harbaugh’s dream was to coach in the NFL. Hoke now is in his dream job. The passion he has for Michigan football is outstanding. He loves the program and unlike a Harbaugh where we did not know how soon he was going to leave us for the NFL, Hoke is the coach who will stay at Michigan till he retires (or his fired). He has already convinced Denard Robinson at staying, and he is going to be able to bring in some great recruits.

It is important though as Michigan fans we realize a few things. Number one, we are not going to be the best team next year. We are going to have to allow Hoke the time he needs to actually have success. We were too impatient with Rich Rod. Hoke has some huge potential, it would be a shame if we got rid of him too soon because we were not patient enough to give him the chance to see what he can do. I know it concerns many people of his overall losing record, more so in the fact he has not really coached in any major school. Being said, Hoke will do some great things for Michigan football. He will be with Michigan football for a long time and we are going to see the man who is passionate about Michigan football, take the program to some very high levels. It will take a little time, but I am real excited about the future of Michigan Football under the leadership of Brady Hoke.
